Types of Radiological Emergencies

Facility-Based Emergencies:
• Medical: Radiation therapy equipment malfunction, radioactive spills.

• Industrial: Source disconnect, gauge damage, equipment failures.

• Research: Laboratory contamination, unsealed source spills.
Malicious Acts:
• Theft of radioactive sources

• Radiological dispersal devices (dirty bombs)

• Sabotage of facilities
Transportation Emergencies:
• Vehicle accidents with radioactive cargo

• Package damage or leakage

• Theft or loss of shipments
Emergency Response Organization

RPA Emergency Response Team Structure:
  • Emergency Director: Overall command and control
  • Radiation Safety Team: Field monitoring and surveys
  • Laboratory Analysis Team: Sample analysis, isotope identification
  • Communications Team: Public information, media liaison
  • Logistics Team: Equipment, supplies, transportation
